I couldn’t believe it… $20.00. I’m not in the market for mountain bike tires right now but I will be in about a month or so. I’m thinking about picking up a set.

I popped into the reviews section of MTBR to see what others are saying about the Maxxis Swampthing. There were 29 reviews with an overall rating of 4.90 out of 5. A couple of the comments I read were that they were a little heavy but not too bad.

The Official Product Description from JensonUSA
The Swampthing is a great downhill tire constructed from soft rubber that will hook on rocks and stumps to give you traction, but still tough enough that it won’t fold when stressed. A cleated knob design allows you to corner, brake, and accelerate without slipping.

Not sure how long the Maxxis Swampthing Tires are gonna last at $20, but you can pick them up at JensonUSA.

If you’ve used these tires then post up some feedback of what you did or didn’t like about the Maxxis

I finally broke down and picked up a night riding light for mountain biking. I purchased a Magicshine 900 Lumen Bike Light from GeoManGear.com.

This is my first real night riding light but while in the purchase process, I had the chance to try several lights on my light list before buying. In the end it ultimately came down to price. Being on a tight budget the Magicshine 900 Lumen MTB light provides more than enough light to see everything, even on the lowest setting.

I’ve yet to run the light on high for 3 straight hours to test its life, simply because all I usually need is a the low or middle settings for a little over a couple of hours. I did notice that I have a bad connector on my light.. it turns off periodically based on it’s position. To keep it from turning off I simply tape the connection to not allow movement.

All in all it’s a great light at a great price. If you need a light and money is tight, the magic shine is the way to go.

I do recommend you buy a helmet mount. I’ve found it easy to mount the magicshine straight to my helmet using the vent wholes but all bike helmets are created differently.

I like this light so much I’m considering buying a second one.

There are events going on everywhere across the USA and around the World. To find an event near you, check the map on IMBA’s Website. The deadline to register an event is September 15th so you still have a few days.

IMBA’s International Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day celebrates the life of Jack Doub, an avid teenage mountain biker from North Carolina who had a true passion for the sport from an early age but passed away in 2002. Funding is provided by the Jack Doub Memorial Endowment. The event will take place each year on the first Saturday in October.

A friend of mine posted up a our local MTB listserve about a new site he stumbled upon over the weekend, where you can download a compiled an exhaustive map containing every known trail in the states of WA, ID, OR, MT, WY, and even AK for your Garmin Edge 605/705.

Switchback.com

Here’s what Roland had to say about it after downloading and trying it out…

If you use Garmin’s MapSource software along with U.S. Topo to upload maps into your GPS for rides, you have probably noticed that the Topo maps (compiled from old USGS 1:100K scale maps I believe) are notoriously poor when it comes to showing individual trails. But if you add this 3rd party map, suddenly every single trail is right there on your screen. I used it on a ride in Bend yesterday, and just for example, it showed every trail in the Phil’s trail network, as well as everything else in the surrounding area.

If you interested in buying Garmin.. check’em out at REI..
